MEET THE OWNERS

  Russ and Stacy Nelson

Creekside Mallow was born right here in Idaho, sparked by a simple idea around a backyard campfire. When our daughter Grace exclaimed, “We should open a gourmet s’mores store!” we had no idea that her excitement would turn into a thriving small business. We started out just trying to craft the perfect marshmallow—and once we did, the response from our community was overwhelming.

Idaho has been at the heart of our journey from the very beginning. From our first events to opening our downtown Caldwell store and kitchen in 2017, this state has supported us in ways we never imagined. The Idaho Small Business Development Center was instrumental in helping us take those first big steps, and we’re still grateful for the guidance and mentorship they continue to provide.

As a family-run business, we believe in the power of local support, hard work, and never giving up on a good idea. Creekside Mallow isn’t just about s’mores—it’s about community, creativity, and the magic that happens when small businesses are given a chance to grow.

MEET THE OWNER

JUSTIN THOMAS

I was raised in North Idaho, spending most of my time on a daily farm and graduating from Post Falls High School. I earned a bachelor's degree in Entrepreneurial  Management  from Boise State University In 1999. After that I spent a little over a year working on Capitol Hill for the US Senate. After that I followed my finance passion to New York City. After 5 years working on the floor of the New York Mercantile Exchange as a clerk I started trading oil for myself. In 2012 I moved back to Boise Idaho and traded oil until 2018.

Once I moved back to Idaho I almost immediately started to grow a beard. I tried multiple beard care products in the beginning. I really liked how beard balms shaped my beard, but I didn't really like the heavy smells or how waxy most beard balms are. My girlfriend (now wife) at the time pointed out how all of the beard care products I was using had either one or multiple ingredients I should not be putting on my face, such as fragrance oils, synthetic ingredients or alcohol. She was an esthetician with many years of experience at the time.

I had recently had success making a hand salve for myself. My hands always cracked and bled in the winter and this solved it. I was on a mission to make an all natural beard balm that was easy to apply, did not have an overwhelming scent, and made my beard look great. It took me 14 months and 56 batches to make that original beard balm and I had no idea I was going to sell it! I was just trying to make the best beard balm I could. After giving samples away to friends I was convinced to have a logo made and think about selling it. My first event was Wintry Market in 2016. I only had one beard balm and the demand was amazing! That weekend changed my life.

We now participate in 20 to 30 events a year, have over 100 retailers, and currently produce 4 scents of both beard balms and beard oils.
